ZILLIKEN, 2014 RIESLING TROCKEN ''ALTE REBEN'', SAARBURG
Rigorous selection, 50 to 130-year old vines — this is not a Riesling to be trifled with. Fragrant notes of lilacs, cream and passion fruit give way to a dry, powerful core of citrus, salt and spice. Contradictions abound: tense acidity, creamy texture and a long lime finish. Like a sun-burnt sailor of yore, the sharp edges of this Riesling serve to protect its gentle, pure heart.

Serving Suggestions: The complexity of this Riesling calls for a bit more serious fare, sautéed veal with thyme, a freshwater fish carpaccio or a delicately poached salmon.

Producer

Zilliken – VDP Mosel, Germany

As early as 1742 records show that ancestors of the Zilliken family were active as wine producers in both Saarburg and Ockfen. The status of the estate and the reputation of its wines were primarily the work of the Royal Prussian District Forester, Ferdinand Geltz (1851-1925). As an affirmation of his achievements, the estate still carries his name. Amongst the many accomplishments of Ferdinand Geltz during his career was that he was one of the first founders of the VDP growers´ group that serves to guarantee quality and promote the wines of the German wine-producing regions.
